Economics is a social science that deals with the creation, distribution and consumption of resources. Because it is about people and the real world, Economics enables students to learn about banking, finance, globalisation, and also about broader social issues such as poverty, education, health and the environment. It is a versatile discipline with close links to politics, sociology, psychology, business and finance.

The appeal of Economics lies especially in its application of theory and quantitative methods to contemporary economic problems. It helps students to think logically, rationally and rigorously. Graduates in Economics as such acquire problem-solving skills that prepare them for a wide range of careers both in the public and private sectors.

Second Major Programme

At NTU, our Economics majors will also have the opportunity to pursue a Second Major programme. Qualified students may take a second major in another discipline offered within the School of Social Sciences (Psychology, Public Policy and Global Affairs, and Sociology ) or the School of Humanities (Chinese, English, History, Linguistics & Multilingual Studies, and Philosophy); second major in Business offered by the Nanyang Business School; or a second major in Communication Studies offered by the School of Communications and Information.

Double Major Programme

Students can also opt for the integrated degree, BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Economics, which is rather popular. This new integrated degree, aimed at students with strong quantitative aptitude and keen interest in economics, is jointly offered by the Division of Mathematical Sciences in the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and the School of Social Sciences.
