Short-Term Research Project

The School of Social Sciences (SSS) welcom​es postgraduate students from overseas universities to undertake short-term research at NTU with out faculty members as a Non-Graduating - Non-Exchange Student for a period of 6 to 12 months.​

​During the period of research tuition fees are waived, however, students are liable for the following fees​ (correct as at 13 February 2020; figures shown are on per annum basis):

Training Employment Pass

The Training Employment Pass (TEP) is applicable to international graduates who wish to apply for training at one of the schools or research centres at NTU. You would need this pass in order to conduct research at NTU. This is not applicable to Singaporean students who are studying overseas who would like to conduct short-term research at NTU.

The Associate Chair Graduate Education Office will liaise with you on the TEP application. Please check your email regularly and do not make any travel plans until your TEP has been approved.

The timeline of TEP application usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks. Here is a list of documents you are expected to submit for the application.​​​

The charging of miscellaneous fees follows the NTU Semester Calendar. You will be billed according to the period of research at NTU. Students who are attached for less than 6 months will have to pay miscellaneous fees for 1 semester only. However, students need not pay another entire semester’s student service fee if his/her attachment’s start/end date overlaps within the first 2 teaching weeks of the semester. There is no pro-rated fees and no refund of fees if the student withdraws. 

For Health Service fee (HSF), additional HSF is applicable if your research duration cross over the new policy year. The policy year spans from 1 July to 30 June.

Scenario Example #1 – Research duration from 1 Jan 2021 to 30 April 2021 – regarded as 1 semester. The breakdown of fees as follows

Procedure to undertake short-term research:

  1. ​​​Consult with an Academic Staff who is suited to supervise your research and obtain supervision confirmation and period of research attachment.

  2. ​Complete the following table and send it to the Graduate Education (GE) office, together with the confirmation from the Academic Staff.
