As living standards improve for the lower-income group, there are concerns about income inequality and whether things that were once considered luxuries are now basic essentials. Assoc Prof Teo You Yenn, head of sociology at NTU, said ordinary Singaporeans feel basic needs go beyond just staying alive to also allow people to make choices, feel respected and participate as others do in social activities. She added that Singapore will need to review wages and wealth redistribution through taxation and social spending to ensure that everyone has sufficient income to meet his basic needs.
